Wings Around Waukesha – Kelly’s Bleachers Big Bend
My husband and I are always on the hunt for new places to try that aren’t chain restaurants. And if the place has wings on their menu, double bonus. We decided to go out for a fish fry and I had heard great things about Kelly’s Bleachers Big Bend. This hidden gem, well you can see it from the freeway but getting to it when off the freeway is tricky, has been a variety of places through the years. Most recently it was Coachhouse and when I was a child it was Lucy and Ethel’s.
I got out of work early on a Friday and we went for an “early bird” dinner. When you have an infant, you eat when they sleep or are contently full so as to not have to rush out of the restaurant with a crabby kiddo screaming away.
We were very pleased with the fish fry options and left with happy full bellies. I’ll write more about the fish fry on another post. But what the fish fry trip did was show us they have wings on Thursdays. KBBB offers $.50 boneless or bone-in wings from 2 to 10 pm. They offer 13 sauces and five dry rubs.
We headed back a few weeks later with my parents to thank them for helping us with home improvement projects and while my parents ordered sandwiches, my husband and I went for wings.
I ordered Teriyaki sauce and Ranch dry rub. My husband went for Sweet Thai Chili sauce and Blackened dry rub. We ordered the appetizer sampler platter to share at the table and that was delicious–especially the breaded chicken tenders. Highly recommend those bad boys!
The wings came on separate plates which made for a bit of a cluster on the table, but we managed. They were decently sauced and seasoned–maybe a little excess. I will ask in the future if I can get the chicken tenders tossed in the teriyaki sauce because that would be amazing.
The teriyaki was a little light on flavor compared to what I am used to, but the wings came out hot and were decent sized. The ranch rub was unique and stuck to the wings. I would suggest to the kitchen to coat them on another plate and then plate them cleaner, as I saw no benefit of having the dry mix on my plate.
My husbands wings were ok. He thought the blackened rub was unique and never had wings like that before. He is unsure if he would order that way again. The Sweet Thai Chili was decent but he has had that flavor better at other places.
